as mentioned before, I have recently had time to myself, time which has been spent reflecting, reviewing and looking forwards. the areas covered have been mostly been around my running, triathlon and lifestyle goals; this includes the unscratched itch of doing something for myself business-wise.
in terms of the latter, I have used the time to revisit some ideas, and look again at how to create some solid foundations. on reflection, past attempts have often been too hurried and impatient; I’ve put thing out into the world a little (ok, a lot!) prematurely. this is where the idea of “parallels” popped into my mind.
consider what we, as walkers / runners / triathletes, do to achieve our goals, we:
- set the goal
- create a training plan
- enlist the help of a coach
- seek accountability and support from friends/family
- execute the training plan and, finally,
- participate in the goal event
as a rule, you wouldn’t really jump straight into the execution and participation stage. if/when that happens, we often end up injured, disheartened, and even lose our mojo (often for months or even years).
in the past I’ve had ideas that have really excited me, and I’ve put them out there prematurely. I think because they are more in the realm of what I already know quite well (technology, the internet etc.) I haven’t focused as much on preparation as I did for something “scarier” like my first marathon, or the “hearts across australia” adventure. and guess what? I’ve failed, burnt out, and lost mojo…
so this is my public commitment to not making that mistake this time…
