Over the last few years, my journey through various health challenges has been both unexpected and enlightening. It began with what I thought was overtraining (it wasn’t), leading to a physical and mental burnout, followed by a diagnosis of sleep apnoea, which shed light on some underlying health issues I wasn’t aware of.
Dealing with Serious Health Concerns
The situation intensified with a severe case of flu, from which recovery seemed endlessly elusive. It was this prolonged period of ill-health that led to the discovery of type 2 diabetes, (finally) explaining my constant fatigue and slow recuperation.
Personal Grief in the Midst of Health Struggles
Amid these health battles, life threw its curveballs. The illness and subsequent loss of my Mum in late 2023 added a layer of emotional challenge to the physical ones. The grief, compounded with the stress of managing two lengthy trips back to the UK, took a toll. And finally, COVID caught up with me!
A Reset in Fitness Goals
The combinatiom of these events has led to a significant regression in my fitness levels, akin to where I was a decade ago. But, I am determined that this won’t just be a story of setbacks; it needs to become a story more about determination, resilience, and perhaps even sheer bloody-mindedness!
Building Mental Strength
Despite the physical setbacks, the mental fortitude I acquired, becoming a runner, has been my greatest ally. As I approach my 55th birthday, the journey ahead is clear – not only to regain my lost fitness but to surpass my past self in both strength and endurance.
A Five-Year Vision for Peak Fitness
The coming five years are not just about recovery; they are about redefining my fitness goals and pushing beyond previous boundaries. It’s a commitment to not only get back to running and triathlons but to achieve a level of fitness that sets new personal benchmarks.
A Message of Resilience
This journey is a reminder to myself and to all who face similar struggles – the importance of perseverance, the strength of the human spirit, and the power of not giving up, regardless of the challenges.
It’s more than a comeback; it’s a new chapter in this journey of life, marked by resilience, hope, and the unwavering belief that with time, effort, and mental strength, we can overcome and achieve more than we ever thought possible.
